Wet Liz Truss slams Daily Star lettuce prank in 49-word ‘free speech’ rant

Ex-Prime Minister Liz Truss has proved she just can’t take a joke as she went off on a rant after the Daily Star lettuce loomed over her once again.

Shortest-serving PM in history Truss, who took the crown from George Canning who died from pneumonia in 1827, stormed off stage in embarrassment after a giant banner emblazoned with the Daily Star’s infamous lettuce was unfurled above her head during her book tour.

The 49-day PM, whose entire political career will be defined by being outlasted by a rotting lettuce purchased by the Daily Star during her chaotic time as Prime Minister, was promoting her new book Ten Years to Save The West.

Appearing in a dark room on a stage at Beccles public hall in Suffolk, Truss was (ironically) wearing a bright green dress, and talking about Donald Trump when suddenly the banner slowly appeared from the stage above her.

The Daily Star lettuce has come back to haunt Liz

In the centre of it was a giant lettuce with googley eyes and the words “I crashed the economy”. Truss continued to talk about Trump, blissfully unaware of what was happening, until some random bloke appeared behind her to tell her… while the other random bloke interviewing her looked confused.

Lettuce Liz, who lasted just 49 days as Prime Minister, looked shocked and said: “That’s not funny” as she quickly exited the stage in a blaze of green glory to muted applause from the audience – who were seemingly unbothered by her leaving and probably weren’t too familiar with British salad-based humour.

Truss, having felt torn apart (yes, we’re doing lettuce puns) and not able to take a joke, then took to Twitter/X to rant about the supposed “free speech” issue: “What happened last night was not funny. Far-left activists disrupted the event, which then had to be stopped for security reasons.

Truss unleashed a 49-word rant on X… come on, get over it!

“This is done to intimidate people and suppress free speech. I won’t stand for it. Would we see the same reaction if the activists were far-right?”

Ironically, the tweet came just hours after Truss voiced support for free speech and Elon Musk, who has been accused of stirring up tensions in the UK surrounding the riots.

The lettuce stunt was later claimed by the satire group Led By Donkeys, who posted a photo of the moment on Twitter/X, and wrote: “Liz Truss is on a pro-Trump speaking tour. So we dropped a strategically-positioned remote-controlled lettuce banner.”

The look of pure horror. No Liz, you’ll never live this down

The choice of outfit for Truss was quickly noticed by others on social media as one wrote: “She matches the lettuce,” while ending the post with a crying emoji.

Another posted: “Whoever advised her to wear that lettuce green dress did great work as well.” And a third chimed in: “She even dressed for the part.”

Sorry Liz, but it is a little funny…
