Met Office say frequent ‘monster thunder storms’ will batter UK as temps plunge
The Met Office has warned that the UK should brace for a series of ‘monster’ thunderstorms set to roll in and out throughout September.
After a scorching summer, stormy weather has swept across the UK from mainland Europe, bringing an end to the heatwave. The mercury hit highs of 34C on Monday but plummeted to a cooler 21C in Northumberland by Wednesday, accompanied by severe thunderous showers.
Despite the recent downpours, the Met Office’s long-range forecast suggests that the threat of thunderstorms isn’t over, with several more weeks of potential storms ahead, which the Mirror describe as ‘monster’.

According to the forecast: “Rain or showers will tend to be most frequent in the northwest, where it may be rather windy at times, with drier and warmer weather more likely towards the south and east. There remains a chance of thundery conditions spreading in from the nearby continent at times.”
This outlook covers the period from August 30 to September 13, with temperatures expected to hover around the seasonal average, generally staying near 15C but potentially dipping lower during unsettled weather.
Forecasters note: “Temperatures most likely close to average overall, falling below in the case of unsettled days, but short, hot spells remain possible in the south and east.”
Wednesday saw particularly heavy rainfall in Dorset and Hampshire as low pressure arrived from the southwest. The northwest of England experienced the worst of the downpours on Thursday.
Brits are set to bask in some sunshine today after a misty start, particularly across Wales, with the prospect of dry and bright weather. Wednesday only saw temperatures hitting a high of 26C in the rural areas of Suffolk, but its predicted the temps will surge even higher today, specifically in Greater London and Essex.
The Met Office’s own website has announced: “Dry with plenty of sunny spells for many on Friday with showers continuing for northwest Scotland. Feeling breezy here but lighter winds in the south. Feeling warm in the sunshine.”
However, umbrellas at the ready as rain is expected to make a comeback Monday night into Tuesday morning. It’ll likely belt down hardest over Cumbria and Lancashire on Monday, before spreading more widely during Tuesday’s commute.
