Anthony Gordon transfer boost for Liverpool as Howe confesses Newcastle reality
Liverpool may not have made a splash in the summer transfer window yet, but there’s still a glimmer of hope for their ambition of signing Anthony Gordon.
The Reds’ chase for Martin Zubimendi to beef up their midfield came up short, and it looks like they won’t be snapping up a replacement before time runs out this month. Sport director Richard Hughes is on his toes, trying to get a fresh face for Arne Slot’s line-up, although the new Dutch boss says he’s content with his current squad.
“I said many times already our squad is really strong so it is not easy to find players to strengthen,” the Dutch boss said. “Zubimendi was one but he chose not to come here so we go forward with the one we have. We’re in a good place and Richard is trying to improve the squad in the background.”

“Zubimendi didn’t want to come and Richard tried everything. We kept the same team but lost Thiago, Joel [Matip] and Adrian and you always talk about transfers but we have a positive team already.”
Earlier in the summer, whispers of Gordon possibly heading to Anfield caused quite the stir as Newcastle United kept an eye on their balance sheets and reportedly offered him to the Premier League giants. Liverpool weren’t too keen on the deal involving defender Joe Gomez going the other way, but this might not be the end of that story, reports the Mirror.

Now with the heads-up on such a tempting transfer, the Reds could be motivated to seize the moment when it comes back around. Gordon’s likely sticking up North for now, but manager Eddie Howe’s spilled the beans on needing to sell players in the future, which could work in Liverpool’s favour.
Newcastle’s coach made it crystal clear the club isn’t under pressure to offload any of their top talent in the current transfer window. “There’s not necessarily financial pressures to lose anybody before the end of this window,” he said.
However, he added: “But player trading is key, and we have to trade players out as well as players in. That’s not necessarily in the next two weeks. But certainly, within the next window, that’s what we’ll have to do.”
Despite rumours swirling about potential departures, the Toon have managed to keep their big names on board this summer. The likes of Gordon, Alexander Isak, and Bruno Guimaraes were all tipped for moves away from St. James’ Park.
Guimaraes, in particular, has seen his stock rise at Newcastle after being handed the captain’s armband following his leadership display against Southampton. Jamaal Lascelles has been bumped up to club captain, with Kieran Trippier stepping into the role of vice-captain.
