McDonald’s followers cannot recover from ‘old-school’ restaurant with ‘misplaced’ merchandise
McDonald’s fans are feeling nostalgic after the restaurant chain gave them a glimpse of what their eateries looked like several decades ago. It comes as the chain gears up to celebrate its 50th birthday in the UK this year.
The first branch opened in in Woolwich, South London, in October 1974, and to celebrate the fast food giant has brought back some vintage mascots such as The Hamburglar.
Now they have gone a step further, giving fans a glimpse of a restaurant decked out just like it would have been in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Posting a clip to TikTok, they started off with a shot of the retro counter and tills, accompanied by a menu listing many items still sold today.

The video then sweeps past the iconic burger-shaped seats which have since been ‘lost’ from most establishments but were once enjoyed by children and adults alike. Eventually the clip pans to the the once-loved Apple Pie Tree before centring on what used to be the “hottest hangout space in town” – a section previously rentable for children’s parties which no longer exists.
The trip down memory lane ends with the employee of the month wall, another piece of McDonald’s history which no longer exists. Patrons were desperate to see some of the old features make a return – with the burger chairs proving a particular hit.
“I remember those burger chairs!” one said. Another chimed in: “I loved the old burger chairs. But that was when visiting McD’s was a treat and not a whenever you wanted thing.”
Meanwhile a third agreed: “Change EVERYTHING back to when it was great, burger chairs, parties, best happy meal toys.”
“Bring back Big Mac 90s size, and those polystyrene boxes and old milkshakes! ” said a fourth.
In a statement, McDonald’s UK said: “McDonald’s UK marks its 50th anniversary with an 80s-themed campaign by Leo Burnett UK, featuring a retro-style film set in Woolwich, London, and nostalgic elements like Cheeseburger Stools and iconic characters. The campaign extends to social media with dance tutorials and exclusive 50th-anniversary merchandise available via MyMcDonald’s Rewards.
“McDonald’s is running a nostalgic 80s-themed advertising campaign and donating proceeds from the Birthday Cake Donut to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK, which is also celebrating its 35th anniversary this year.”
