McNair also played for the Baltimore Ravens before he retired from the sport

One social media user wrote ‘this is gonna be wild’ while a second published on X: ‘I remember where I was when this happened.’ And a third commenter simply said: ‘His murder still doesn’t sit right with me.’

And before it hits our screens on August 20, we talk you through who Steve McNair (nicknamed Air) was and the horrific way his life ended.

Who was Steve McNair?

He was born in 1973 and was raised alongside his four siblings by a single mother who he said ‘went without’ and worked tirelessly to make sure her kids were supported and happy.

From a young age, McNair was a talented sportsman, and excelled at football, basketball, running and baseball.

But his real passion was football; in 2000 he led the Tennessee Titans to the Super Bowl before being named co-MVP alongside the great Peyton Manning in 2003.

Steve McNair
He was a married father who was in a secret relationship with a mistress

He lost in his only Super Bowl appearance but was described in the Netflix trailer as the ‘toughest’ man in the sport and is fondly remembered for being one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks of his time.

McNair retired in 2008 but his days as a retired athlete were tragically short-lived.

Tragedy

Despite being only the fifth-ever player to pass for more than 20,000 yards in NFL history, his legacy is now a dark one.

That’s because he and his 20-year-old mistress – Sachel Kazemi – were found dead on July 4, 2009, at a flat he was renting in Nashville.

McNair was just 36 and he had been married to Mechelle McNair for 12 years when his body was found riddled with gunshot wounds.

On the day of his death, he transferred $2,000 to his mistress who said she was ‘stressed’ about money issues while they swapped flirty messages.

He texted her ‘on my way’ after putting his kids to bed – and he was later believed to have been shot dead while sleeping on the couch.

Two bullets struck his head and two his body, and the deaths were ruled a murder-suicide with perpetrator Kazemi reportedly blasting herself in the head after killing the NFL star.

However, despite the seemingly open and shut case, speculation about a possible double execution has been rife over the years, and Untold: The Murder of Air McNair promises to take a closer look at the suspicious murder.
