Moment stolen Amazon van speeds off dragging deliveryman to his loss of life

This is the shocking moment a stolen Amazon van speeds off after a delivery driver was dragged half a mile to his death as he clung on trying to stop thieves.

Claudiu-Carol Kondor, 42, was on his rounds delivering Amazon parcels on Tuesday evening when his grey transit van was stolen in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

He tried to stop the theft but was left fighting for his life on the road, and tragically died a short time later.

Mr Kondor, who leaves behind heartbroken wife Mariana, was left fatally injured when the van slammed into parked cars in an apparent bid to shake him off.

Haunting CCTV has now shown the moment his stolen van raced away from the scene shortly after the smash.

The nightmarish footage comes as West Yorkshire Police continues with their manhunt to track down the 42-year-old’s alleged killers.

This morning the force said a 32-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of Mr Kondor’s murder.

Murder detectives have also released a photo of a second suspect, 24-year-old Eddie Hampshire, who ‘they urgently want to trace’.

The horrific incident took place at about 6.45pm on Tuesday when Mr Kondor returned to see a man jumping into his vehicle.

He tried to stop the thief by getting into the van himself, but the suspect drove away at speed, dragging the driver along as he desperately hung out of the door.

The silver Ford Transit Cargo then smashed into two parked cars, around half a mile away.

As Mr Kondor lay dying in the street, the thief drove off, and abandoned the vehicle six miles away in Heights Drive.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said today: ‘The investigation into Mr Kondor’s murder is progressing at pace and we are now appealing for information from the public to help trace Eddie Hampshire as a suspect for his murder.

‘We are continuing to carry out extensive enquiries to locate him, following the arrest of a man on suspicion of murder last night, and we need to hear urgently from anyone who has seen Hampshire or who has any information that could assist in securing his arrest.’

The release of Hampshire’s photo comes just hours after police arrested a man on suspicion of murder.

The force said in a statement: ‘The arrested man remains in custody and detectives from West Yorkshire Police Homicide and Major Enquiry Team are continuing to progress the investigation.’

Police launched a manhunt for the thief following the incident that rocked an inner city neighbourhood.

Hundreds of people sent their condolences to the driver’s family on Facebook , calling it ‘unfair, sad and heartbreaking.’ One said: ‘Nobody should have to encounter this while simply carrying out their job.’

The driver, who delivered Amazon parcels through a third party courier, was found seriously injured at the scene shortly before 7pm.

Officers attended and found the victim unconscious with members of the public trying to help him.

Mr Kondor was given emergency treatment by ambulance staff but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later, with police launching a murder inquiry.

West Yorkshire Police said the driver’s family are ‘completely devastated’.

Mike Neill, Operations Manager of the SP Transport Group, launched a GoFundMe in Mr Kondor’s memory which has already raised nearly £2000.

It reads: ‘It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the loss of our beloved colleague, Claudiu-Carol Kondor.

‘Claudiu was a dedicated and cherished member of the SP Transport Group family, who tragically lost his life on August 20, 2024, during a struggle that occurred in the midst of a van theft. This unimaginable loss has left us all devastated.

‘Claudiu was more than just a colleague—he was a friend, a confidant, and a valued member of our team. His commitment to his work and the camaraderie he brought to the workplace will never be forgotten. The impact of this tragedy extends far beyond our workplace, affecting all who had the privilege of knowing Claudiu.

‘We are launching this GoFundMe campaign to support Claudiu’s family during this incredibly difficult time.

‘Our goal is to alleviate some of the financial burdens they are facing, including funeral costs, legal expenses, and any other unforeseen challenges that may arise. While no amount of money can fill the void left by Claudiu’s passing, we hope to provide some comfort and support to his loved ones.

‘We understand that this is a challenging time for everyone, and we are grateful for any contribution you can make, no matter the size. Every donation will go directly to Claudiu’s family to help them navigate the difficult days ahead.

‘Please consider donating to honour Claudiu’s memory and to support his family during this heartbreaking time. If you are unable to contribute financially, sharing this campaign with your network would mean the world to us.’

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector James Entwistle said: ‘Our investigation remains at an early stage but, based on what we currently know, this appears to be a truly shocking incident where the victim has been killed while going about his business as a parcel delivery driver.

‘His family has been informed and they are completely devastated about what has happened. We are working to support them at what is a really difficult time and are doing everything we can to get them the answers they need.

‘We are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full circumstances and to identify the person whose incredibly dangerous actions have been responsible for causing his death.

‘We have spoken to a number of witnesses but are still very keen to hear from anyone who witnessed any part of this incident.

‘That appeal covers the circumstances of the van being stolen in Alliance Street at about 6.45pm; the journey it took along Heights Drive to where the victim was found; its movements as it fled the scene there; and its movements before being found abandoned in Highlands Walk in Belle Isle, which is about six miles away.

‘We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who has seen the suspect in the van at any point after it was stolen or when it was abandoned, and we ask that people who were in the vicinity of any part of this incident check their dashcam, doorbell and home CCTV footage to see if they have caught anything that could assist the investigation.

‘People will be understandably appalled by this man’s death in these circumstances, and I want to reassure them that we are absolutely determined to find the person responsible.’

Amazon said the driver was working for a third party courier delivering its parcels.

A spokesperson said: ‘This is a terrible incident and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the delivery driver’s loved ones, family and colleagues at our delivery service provider.

‘We will do all that we can to assist police with their investigations.’

Tributes to the van driver were paid on Facebook.

One wrote: ‘Poor man out working, no doubt to provide for his family, and some low life scum has taken his van.

‘He’s tried to stop them, so he doesn’t lose his job and instead he’s lost his life.’

Another said: ‘RIP to the poor man who’s lost his life doing an honest day’s work and to his poor family.’

And a third wrote: ‘My heart breaks for this man and his family. What is the world coming to when you can’t even be safe doing your job. My thoughts with the emergency services who had to attend this tonight too.’
