England cricket fan makes catch with pint in his hand and does not spill a drop

The catch of the day at Old Trafford came from the stands, rather than the field, on Friday.

England welcomed Sir Lanka to Manchester for the third day of their first test – with the weather seemingly set to disrupt play. However, as the rain clouds parted, the Barmy Army was treated to a morning of action.

Mark Wood was the latest at the crease for England, who had only shipped two wickets during the morning session, when he hit Asitha Fernando for a massive six. However, one fan, with a pint in hand plucked it out of the air when it landed in the stands.

It drew the approval of grinning England legend Paul Collingwood sitting in the stands, who mimicked holding a pint in one hand and making a catch with the other. And cricket fans were in awe of the catch, as the man in question even avoided spilling a drop of beer: “Not a drop spilt and one handed take a bow!”

A second shared: “We salute you, sir in the stands!” “One handed catch, with a beer in the other. Absolute hero,” a third said on social media. And another added: “Pint in the left hand and a catch with the right!”

However, the party atmosphere for Wood would soon end when Fernando bowled him for 22 – ending his short cameo. England ended with 358 runs, with a healthy lead of 116 runs thanks to Jamie Smith’s maiden test century and Harry Brook’s 56.

When it came time for England to bowl they got off to the perfect start thanks to Chris Woakes, who bowled out Nishan Madushka for a duck. And his opening partner was soon following back to the clubhouse.

No sooner had Madushka been dismissed than Kusal Mendis was caught by Smith, in the slip of the wicket, off the back of a ball from Gus Atkinson.
