Football followers furious over ‘woke’ new Champions League theme changing iconic tune

Football fans have slammed the new Champions League theme as ‘woke nonsense’ on social media.

For years prior to every Champions League game, the iconic theme has boomed out of the loud speakers across the continent, serving as the signature of Europe’s elite domestic club competition. However, the 2024/25 Champions League competition will be like none of it’s predecessors.

This season, Europe’s elite competition is set to move away from the traditional group stage format, instead following a new league phase which will see teams play two more matches than the usual six. They will also play eight different teams as opposed to three home and away.

“This woke nonsense has to stop,” wrote one fan on X after having listened to the updated Champions League tune. A second added: “I speak for everyone when I say we don’t like this version. We want the old one back.”

A third said: “The Conference League anthem is clear!!!” with a fourth commenting: “Sometimes we don’t need to try and fix what’s not broken, what is this.”

A fifth wrote: “They touched our anthem? What in the!!” attaching a photo of the now iconic Sean Dyche ‘Utter Woke Nonsense’ meme. A sixth furious fan said: “I swear I never heard a single person complaining about the original version.”

Teams across Europe will learn their Champions League fate next week when the annual draw takes place at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco on Thursday, 29 August, with plenty of fans tuning in to see how the new format will pan out and just who they will face in their eight league phase games.
