Jenas received Women’s Football Ally award earlier than BBC sacking over textual content complaints

Former BBC host Jermaine Jenas, sacked by the broadcaster amid allegations of “inappropriate behaviour”, was named Women’s Football Ally of the Year just months ago.

Jenas, 41, known for his work on shows like the One Show and Match of the Day, was let go following concerns raised about his “workplace conduct,” including digital communications such as texts, allegedly sent to a female colleague.

Despite this, Jermaine insists there are “two sides to every story” and is leaving it to his lawyers to “deal with it”. In light of these events, it’s been highlighted that the ex-footballer was honoured at the Women’s Football Awards earlier this year.

He received the Women’s Football Ally of the Year Award – a title previously held by Harry Kane – at the ceremony in May. Upon receiving the award, Jermaine expressed: “[I’m] really proud, actually. Y’know I kind of … y’know personally I’ve always gone about things just who I am as a person.

“So to receive this kind of like ally award to the women’s game, as special as it feels, I’m just a bit like ‘well I’m just trying to be me’. Y’know I’ve always supported the women’s game. I’ve got three daughters of my own.

“My mum raised me so I’ve always been a kind of strong advocate of women in sport in general. It’s nice, I have to say, to be kind of like acknowledged for just being I suppose yourself,” reports the Mirror.

“I’m really appreciative of it, so thank you very much.” But his words raised eyebrows at the time and now they’re biting back, as some fans on Twitter reckon his comments haven’t stood the test of time. One user posted: “This hasn’t aged well.”

Another added their two pence with: “This aged well…” Meanwhile, some used his past title to have a pop over the latest drama, with digs like: “Not Women’s Football Ally of the Year Jermaine Jenas.”

All this comes hot on the heels of the news that Jermaine’s been given the boot by the BBC. The corp’s spokesperson said: “We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting lineup.”

And an insider told The Mirror: “It’s a very sensitive landscape at the BBC at the moment with the various scandals that have beset it of late. Any hint of workplace misconduct and they needed to come down [like] a ton of bricks.”

After a woman raised concerns about receiving unsolicited messages, it’s been reported that other staff members also stepped forward.

A source told The Sun: “The first complaint was raised after Jermaine flirtily messaged a female member of staff on the One Show, and she raised her misgivings in a formal capacity.

“The BBC knows it cannot now ignore concerns or complaints so after immediate routine enquiries the decision was taken to take him off air, and terminate his contract. They acted swiftly and decisively.”

The source also clarified “Jermaine’s conduct is absolutely nothing” like that of former BBC News anchor Huw Edwards and stressed there’s “no suggestion of illegality”.

Amidst the unfolding drama, Jermaine was on-air with talkSPORT when the news broke about his BBC exit. He then gave an interview to the broadcaster, saying: “Look, I can’t really talk about it. I, as you can probably see, I am not happy about it. But currently, as it stands, I’m going to have to let the lawyers deal with it.

“You know, there’s two sides to every story, as we know. So that’s all I can say right now.”
