Jermaine Jenas rescued driver then got BBC boot – footy pundit’s odd day in full

Former BBC presenter Jermaine Jenas helped rescue a motorist whose car had crashed into a tree just hours before news broke of his sacking by the national broadcaster.

On Thursday, the BBC announced Jenas’ contract had been terminated due to ‘inappropriate behaviour’, with the 41-year-old alleged to have sent unsolicited messages to a female member of staff. A spokesperson for the BBC said: “We can confirm that he [Jenas] is no longer part of our presenting line.”

The married father of four hosted ‘The One Show’ alongside Alex Jones, as well as ‘Match of the Day’ on occasion. He had been tipped to succeed Gary Lineker as the regular presenter of ‘Match of the Day’, but that prospect now looks to be dead in the water.

And it has been revealed that hours prior to his sacking being made public, Jenas, alongside a fellow neighbour, helped rescue a motorist whose car had crashed into a tree. The Mail report the former Tottenham and Newcastle midfielder and his neighbour Peter Marino, helped pull a 40-year-old man from his wrecked BMW, which had come off the road and crashed into a tree.

The now ex-BBC presenter, who appeared on talkSPORT yesterday to bizarrely host their ‘Drivetime’ show, stayed with the man until the police and an ambulance arrived at the scene in Hertfordshire.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night, with Jenas helping to divert on-coming traffic in the immediate aftermath, telling drivers to “slow down!” Speaking after the incident, Marino said: “Jermaine was great in being a caring neighbour. His house is opposite mine and it was around 10pm and we both must have heard the crash. It was so loud, an enormous bang.

“We were the first to come out. The driver was moaning in pain, but we helped him out and laid him on the floor. Jermaine was very concerned about him and so was I. It is a miracle that the guy is alive. The bonnet of the BMW is caved in and the tree has been torn apart.”

Marino, a software company director, also confirmed the former England international appeared to be his “usual self”, and did not give any indication of his impending BBC sacking. And the dramatic car crash scenes were just the beginning of a wild 24 hour sequence that saw Jenas go from Lineker’s potential successor on arguably the BBC’s biggest show, to being out of work.

As the news of his sacking broke, the was hosting talkSPORT’s ‘Drivetime’ show alongside Jermaine Pennant. And then after their three-hour show, which ran from 4pm to 7pm, Jenas gave an interview to the station’s presenter Hugh Woozencroft, in which he was asked a series of questions about his alleged ‘inappropriate behaviour’.

Speaking to Woozencroft, Jenas said: “Look, I can’t really talk about it. I, as you can probably see, am not happy about it. But currently as it stands, I’m going to have to let the lawyers deal with it. There’s two sides to every story, as we know so that’s all I can say right now.”

Jenas repeatedly said he could not talk about the situation and would be leaving his lawyers to deal with the fallout of his sacking. He has also since been dropped by his representation M&C Saatchi Merlin, with his profile page with the agency now displaying a 404 error page.
