Life inside iconic metropolis’s hidden tunnels – do not go or you might ‘get chopped up’

Las Vegas is known as the “most decadent city in the US”, with a glittering main strip of casinos and bars.

Flashy tourists regularly flock to the city’s gambling dens, considered some of the most lucrative in the world. Depending on the day, between $1million and $10million dollars are spent by giddy punters searching for excitement.

But little do these high-flyers know, barely metres below their feet is an elaborate maze of tunnels measuring hundreds of miles in total. There are hundreds of entrances to the catacombs, which were built to capture and redirect Las Vegas’ occasional downpours and flash floods.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.

The entrances to the tunnels are all around the city

Some entrances are next to the biggest and most popular casinos, including Caesars Palace, the Rio, the Flamingo and the Orleans. Because of the constant flow of water through them, these cavernous routes are often damp and totally devoid of light – in stark contrast to the bright lights above.

These tunnels are home to hundreds of people who have been left behind by America, a country dealing with an ever-growing gap between rich and poor.

YouTuber Drew Binksy recently investigated the underground realm, teaming up with homeless charity Shine a Light Foundation.

Binksy encountered a man called ‘Jay’, who had resided below Las Vegas for over 10 years.

‘Jay’ has lived under the city for years

“It’s horrible [to live down here], it floods all the time,” said Jay. “Thievery is a massive problem. And it’s haunted – there’s some stuff down here that’s wrong. It used to be a community but now those days are long gone.

“I’ve seen people killed down here – they get chopped up. I don’t really keep up with the laws [up there]. Every day down here is like groundhog day, you try and get ahead but it won’t work.”

Drug-use is rife in the tunnels, with many residents like Jay resorting to smoking “dope” to get them through each day.

“There’s nothing to look forward to down here,” Jay added. “In 10 years where will I be? Probably dead.”

According to Deseret News some corners of the tunnels have become rudimentary communities. People use electricity from batteries and piece together meagre apartments from rubble and rubbish.

Some corners of the tunnels have their own community

Each occupied tunnel has its own “unofficial leader”, with its own unique customs and rituals.

According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in 2023 there were 653,104 experiencing homelessness in the US, with 1,500-odd counted in Las Vegas’ tunnel kingdom.
