Joelinton avoids pink card for problem that may have been ‘banned within the NFL’
Football fans have joked Joelinton produced a challenge that would have been banned in the NFL.
During Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Newcastle United and Bournemouth, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) cleared a potential violent conduct incident involving Newcastle midfielder Joelinton.
The match saw Eddie Howe’s team secure a point in a controversial manner on his return to the Vitality Stadium. Dango Outtara thought he had clinched the win in stoppage time, but VAR ruled out his would-be winning goal.

Newcastle managed to claw their way back into the game after Anthony Gordon netted a well-executed second-half equaliser. The Magpies were trailing by a goal at half-time, courtesy of Marcus Tavernier’s close-range tap-in.
The VAR decision led to extra time being added to the initial four minutes of stoppage time. During this period, both teams strived for the crucial second goal.

Towards the end of the match, Joelinton held back Bournemouth goalkeeper Neto to prevent a swift counter-attack by seemingly grabbing him around the neck.
This action by the Brazilian sparked outrage among the Bournemouth players, with Joelinton only receiving a caution, reports Chronicle Live. The decision not to issue a red card further infuriated the home team’s bench.
“I’m crying you literally aren’t allowed to do this in the NFL,” one fan said on social media. While a second added: “I am so sorry, what have I just watched? This is utterly ridiculous!”

According to The Chronicle, VAR checked and cleared the incident for violent conduct. Instead, a member of Andoni Iraola’s coaching staff was shown a straight red card for his protests.
Post-match, Howe told Sky Sports: “It was probably a bit reckless from Joelinton. You could see what he is trying to do – he’s trying to stop the keeper – but you can’t go near the head area. That’s something we will talk to him about.”
