Last couple of minutes of doomed yacht noticed trapped passengers scramble for air pockets

Passengers trapped on the doomed Bayesian spent their final moments scrambling to reach air pockets as the luxury yacht sank.

The bodies of six passengers including tech tycoon and boat owner Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah were pulled from the submerged vessel.

Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judy Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo were also recovered from the sunken Bayesian.

As many questions remain over how the boat could sink so fast, and who, if anyone, is responsible for the the tragic incident, prosecutors have launched a manslaughter and shipwreck inquiry.

They pieced together the trapped passengers’ terrifying final moments, as the £30million yacht’s anchor gave way during freak weather in the early hours of Monday morning, reports The Sun.

After the storm tore through the Bayesian’s mooring, the yacht was dragged through the water for some 358 metres and started taking in water. It sank within minutes.

It appears the victims attempted to escape their cabins on the starboard side in a desperate effort to reach safety on the port side.

Bentivoglio Fiandra, head of the Palermo fire department and member of the divers’ rescue squad said as the Bayesian sank stern-first before rolling onto its right side, those trapped onboard scrambled for air.

He said: “As a result, the victims sought refuge on the left side of the boat, where the last air pockets remained as the vessel was sinking.”

Divers found five bodies in the first cabin and Hannah’s body was discovered in the third chamber on the left.

Questions remain as to how the yacht sank so quickly

Fiandra went on: “Inside it was a very confusing place, with wardrobes and furniture whirling all around us, and lots of mirrors reflecting back our lights at us.

“The bodies were all wedged in tight spots, with furniture on top or beside them. They were all stuck there.”

Chief Prosecutor Ambrogio Cartosio said the victims would have been asleep when the tornado, or waterspout, hit, leaving them unable to escape.
