Sainsbury’s and Tesco recall Oreos which may comprise peanuts

Stores including Sainsbury’s and Tesco have been forced to recall batches of Oreo cookies over fears they could contain peanuts due to a major labelling error.

The treats sold by Whatever Brands pose a major health risk as nuts are not mentioned on the label and it could cause those allergic to go into anaphylactic shock.

In extreme cases, and without urgent treatment, their throats could balloon and they might choke to death.

It has led to Sainsbury’s and Tesco pulling the Oreo items, typically priced at £1.99, from their shelves and recalling those already sold.

The affected products include dark and white chocolate, strawberry cream, blueberry ice cream, cream chocolate cookie and vanilla cookie variants.

The Oreo products sold by Whatever Brands may contain peanuts and it is not mentioned on the label.

Government health watchdog the Food Standards Agency issued a statement following the alert and said: ‘Whatever Brands is recalling several Oreo products because they may contain peanuts, which are not mentioned on the label.

‘This only affects products sold in the UK with a Whatever Brands label. They pose a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts.’

Those with nut allergies who come into contact with the cookies can see their throats balloon and they might choke to death.

Their immune system starts to collapse, blood pressure drops and their airway can tighten so they can’t breathe and lose consciousness.

Less severe reactions include hives, eczema or swelling and rashes on the skin, runny nose and sneezing, red or watery eyes, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea.

The Anaphylaxis Campaign, which helps sufferers, said ‘Anaphylaxis is a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction affecting more than one body system such as the airways, heart, circulation, gut and skin.

‘Symptoms can start within seconds or minutes of exposure to the food or substance you are allergic to and usually will progress rapidly.

‘There may also be a dramatic fall in blood pressure (anaphylactic shock). The person may become weak and floppy and may have a sense of something terrible happening.

‘This may lead to collapse, unconsciousness and – on rare occasions death.’

The product alert from Whatever Brands read: ‘In the UK we are recalling a limited number of Oreo Dark & White chocolate, Strawberry Cream and Blueberry Cream Ice Cream flavour, Cream Chocolate flavour and Vanilla Cookie from Indonesia as they are not labelled correctly.

‘The products being recalled because they may contain traces of peanut, which are not mentioned on the label.

‘If you have purchased an affected Oreo products, please do not consume the product and contact our careline team for further guidance.’
