Man Utd have ‘main benefit’ in touchdown Sterling and Sancho Chelsea swap deal

Raheem Sterling could fulfil a childhood dream if he opts to swap Chelsea for Manchester United this summer.

The 29-year-old has been sidelined by new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca after having been dropped entirely from the Blues squad for their Premier League opener against Manchester City.

He was also not part of the Chelsea squad who beat Wolves 6-2 this past weekend, has had the number seven shirt taken off him and been banished from first-team training.

While both Chelsea and Sterling want a divorce, no deal for the England winger has emerged yet. Sterling has three-years left on his bumper deal he inked at Stamford Bridge back in 2022 after departing City.

While he could stay at Chelsea, given the Blues have already signed both Pedro Neto and Joao Felix, it seems unlikely Sterling will be included in Maresca’s 25-man squad.

With the transfer window set to slam shut this week, one deal Chelsea are reportedly considering is a swap deal for Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, which would see Sterling return to the north-west, only this time in red rather than sky blue.

Like Sterling, Sancho has also been left out of United’s squads for their Premier League game against Fulham and Brighton, following a mixed loan spell with Borussia Dortmund, reports the Mirror. And a potential swap between Chelsea and United would see Sterling play for the team he supported as a child.

Speaking to the Mirror in 2019, Sterling said: “I shouldn’t really say this – not now, definitely not now! – but when I was young I was a massive United fan. I had an old United kit, from when they won the last FA Cup. I was at the final in 2007.”

And in a bizarre twist of fate, a move in the opposite direction for Sancho would also see him play for the team he supported growing up too. Speaking to talkSPORT in 2019, Sancho said: “I was a Chelsea fan growing up, I can’t lie. Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were my favourite players at the time.”

With the transfer window closing on Friday, time is running out for Chelsea and United to find a move away for Sterling and Sancho, who want to play regular minutes this season. And it seems more than likely the two will be on the move, probably on-loan come the end of the window.
