Michael Gove responds to Angela Rayner Ibiza clip as Tories advised to ‘loosen up’
Former Tory frontbencher Michael Gove has voiced his support for Angela Rayner after she was filmed partying at a superclub in Ibiza.
The Deputy Prime Minister, who regularly went head-to-head with Mr Gove in the Commons, was seen jumping, dancing and cheering during a night out on the party island. The clip went viral, but was met with whining from Tories who questioned whether she should be enjoying herself during the summer break.
Mr Gove – who was himself famously filmed dancing in an Aberdeen nightclub when he was Housing Secretary – joked it was a “tradition” for frontbenchers. As well as being Keir Starmer’s deputy, Ms Rayner now does Mr Gove’s old job.

Ms Rayner enjoyed a night out in Hï Ibiza club, with smoke cannons seen going off. Celeb DJ Denise van Outen, who shared the video, described it as a “surprise booth rave up with Angela Rayner“.
Mr Gove today responded to a post by Conservative Home founder Tim Montgomerie on Twitter/X. Mr Montgomerie wrote: “Angela Rayner is absolutely not my political cup of tea (or even my political glass of Sangria) but all right-wingers criticising her for dancing in Ibiza need to lighten up. I’m always glad when politicians take some time off and rest. Plus… she’s a pretty good dancer.”
Mr Gove replied: “It’s a tradition for Secretaries of State in the department.” Ms Rayner, who has been known to enjoy 12-hour raves, boogied beside renowned DJ FISHER who blasted out a dance remix of Gotye’s hit song Somebody That I Used to Know.
As the beat of the song dropped, the nightclub lit up with flashing lights as Ms Rayner jumped up and down in time with the music. At an interview at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last August, Ms Rayner said she was “proud” of her 12-hour raves. The politician, who is 44, said: “The girls I was raving with are half my age, and I was like ‘I’m a grandma’. I was proud of that. 4pm I started, and I got home at six o’clock in the morning when the sun was shining and I was like: ‘Yes, I can do it.'”
Mr Gove was filmed with his arms flailing wildly along to heavy techno beats in the surprising clip in 2021. A source close to the then-Cabinet member said: “He loves Aberdeen and its nightlife.”
