Boffins say eat much less bacon as they warn additional rashers may trigger coronary heart assault

People are being urged to eat less bacon to cut the risk of a heart attack.

Health charity Blood Pressure UK has recommended cutting down our intake, along with ham and cheese. The foods are high in salt, which increases blood pressure – the country’s biggest cause of avoidable death, it warns.

As many as 4million Brits could have had undiagnosed high blood pressure, according to the charity. The NHS advises that nobody should be consuming more than 6g of salt a day.

Phil Pyatt, Blood Pressure UK chief executive, said: “It’s hard to believe a little bit of salt can have such an impact on our health.”

He urged the public to “take control of their health” by eating less salt, more fruit and vegetables and doing more exercise.

The charity added: “A two-rasher bacon bap with ketchup would make up a third of your daily salt limit. And if you add an extra two rashers that’s half your recommended salt limit reached in just one meal.”

High blood pressure has no obvious symptoms and often goes undetected unless someone gets a checkup or has a heart attack.

NHS England is launching a new initiative where people will be offered a blood pressure check when having dental care or an eye test.
