MI5 on the lookout for guards to maintain actual 007s secure – even when they’re obese

Spooks are advertising for security guards to keep real life 007s safe – and it doesn’t matter if they are a little overweight.

Bosses at MI5 want the security officers to work a 12-hour rotating day and night shift pattern for £39,781-a-year protecting James Bond style spies. And they have assured potential candidates they should not worry if they are carrying a little bit of extra timber or feel out of shape, as they could still bag a plum role.

A blurb for the role posted online reads: “All candidates for this role will attend a general fitness medical, which includes an eyesight test, hearing test, step test and advice on your Body Mass Index (BMI) – but don’t worry, you don’t need to be a high-performing athlete.

“We’re aware that people may have misconceptions around what a Security Officer ‘looks like’ at MI5.”

Applicants don’t have to worry about being ripped like 007

Applicants are also encouraged to apply for the jobs regardless of their background or previous “lived experiences”.

The job ad continues: “Please note, we’re not looking for a specific ‘type’ of person. We’re committed to ensuring all candidates, regardless of their backgrounds, identities, lived experiences, and perspectives are given the support and training they need to thrive in this role.”

Potential recruits are also advised they could end up bagging the chance “to work on some key security projects” in the Security Officer role.

Successful applicants could get to work on ‘some key security projects’

Billed as a “unique entry point to a career in security” a description states the job will involve “conducting physical searches, and monitoring CCTV to identify potential risks”. Other tasks could involve “responding to an alarm, administering first aid, or advising a visitor on our security processes” as well as meeting people from “across government or our partner agencies”.

In May, we reported Secret Service chiefs were hunting for a pensions experts to look after spies’ investments. Bosses at MI5 were offering £43,957-a-year to a senior pensions specialist who can manage benefit packages for real-life James Bonds.

And in April we told how spy chiefs were looking to hire a team of people to battle assassins, poisoners and kidnappers sent to cause havoc on British streets by the Iranian regime. Earlier this year we also revealed bosses were on the hunt for a weapons expert, like Q in the 007 movies.
