Jimmy Carter, 99, reveals who he thought spoke finest on the DNC

Former President Jimmy Carter is approaching his 100th birthday next month, but even as the ailing Democrat has been in hospice care for 18 months, he is paying attention to politics and the 2024 election.

The 99-year-old’s son James Earl ‘Chip’ Carter III was interviewed by The Washington Post where he shared how his father has been spending some of his time, including watching all of the speeches of the Democratic National Convention last month.

Carter was not in attendance for the convention in Chicago, but he was the oldest Democratic delegate. And his family recorded all of the speeches for him.

‘He thought Michelle Obama was the best, and he thought Kamala was great, too,’ Carter’s 74-year-old son Chip said.

The former president was not the only one to praise the former First Lady’s speech last month. Her blistering takedown of former President Donald Trump on the second night of the convention was one of the most talked about addresses of the entire event.

Carter turns 100 years old on October 1. While his health slipped further after the death of his wife Rosalynn in November, his family said with his birthday approaching, the 99-year-old is talking more, asking about the campaign season and ‘delighting’ in Kamala Harris’ momentum.

According to his son Chip, the ex-president’s main focus is actually no making it to his birthday, even as there are a series of events planned, but another monumental event.

The younger Carter revealed to The Washington Post his father’s response when told some people believe he’s trying to stay alive to reach the milestone birthday.

He said he didn’t care about that. It’s just a birthday. He said he cared about voting for Kamala Harris,’ he said.

The Carter family said the 39th president can’t wait to cast his mail-ballot for the vice president.

‘He does not believe Donald Trump should be president again,’ Chip Carter said.

Georgia is one of the biggest battlegrounds of the 2024 election season. The Real Clear Politics average has Harris up over rival Donald Trump by 0.1 percent. President Biden won the state by less than 12,000 votes in 2020.

Carter also shared with The Washington Post his dad’s response to Biden deciding he would not seek a second term this summer.

According to Chip, the former president turned to him while watching the 81-year-old announce he would not run for reelection and said softly ‘that’s sad.’

Biden and Carter will have another thing in common besides both being Democratic presidents: each will only have served one term as commander in chief.
