Father challenges his son to guide a £100 getaway

A resourceful father challenged his son to book the pair a one-day getaway for his 13th birthday – and the teen managed to take them abroad on a very tight budget.

Dean Playford, 35, gave Dylan just £100 to take the pair to another country for the day.

Dylan, from East Sussex, managed to find a popular destination with £8 to spare.

The teenager sourced a getaway deal to visit Prague in the Czech Republic for the day, and the airplane fanatic even got to sit in the cockpit on the way over.

Mr Playford said: ‘With the cost of travel and holidays being so much, we thought it would be fun to set him a challenge for his 13th birthday!

‘I gave him a £100 budget, and the rules of the trip were, we could fly anywhere, but we have to fly there and back in one day.’

Dylan took on the challenge with enthusiasm and managed to find the perfect day-long getaway to Prague – at the low cost of £92 return.

But it wasn’t without a lot of research, with Mr Playford explaining that his then-12-year-old sent him a PowerPoint presentation detailing their top five options.

The father said: ‘He’s very mature for his age and we’d sat together looking at flights a lot before so he knows how the process works!

‘He loved it! I mentioned that he wanted to be a pilot when we landed and they were happy to have him in the cockpit.

‘He looked quite overwhelmed by the experience.’

Mr Playford added that Prague was a ‘beautiful city’ to explore for a few hours.

‘There were lots of things to see in a small area which made it great for a quick visit.’

However, it was the trip there and back which became Dylan’s highlight.

‘Dylan loves planes and different airlines and wants to be a pilot,’ Mr Playford said.

‘The highlight was an RAF plane landing from Germany just as the sun was setting.’
