Five issues in your house ‘are attracting spiders’ say specialists
As the temperatures in the UK have already started to dip with the arrival of autumn we will all, naturally, be spending more time indoors. However, as people head inside so too will a creature not welcome in most homes.
September is the worst time of year for those with a fear of spiders as the arachnids make their way into homes looking for drier, warmer conditions. And as this coincides with their mating season, the males will follow female spiders indoors.
Experts have also warned that giant false widow spiders are just one type of arachnid set to come into people’s homes. Their bites are known to cause painful burns and swelling and can lead to a fever.
Unfortunately, for anyone who dislikes the eight-legged creatures, there are certain common things found around the home that could also be attracting them inside. Experts at Panther Pest Control revealed five such things that could cause a spider infestation in your home.
These are:
- Other insects
- Rubbish
- Fruit
- Water
- Good hiding places.
Insects
Panther Pest Control said: “Their food choices make them nature’s best domestic pest controllers, as they feed on insects. Anything from drain flies through crickets and mosquitoes to fruit flies, cockroaches, earwigs or clothes moths is part of their menu.”
It is worth seeing what insects you already have around the home and getting rid of them if you can.
Rubbish
Domestic waste draws other insects – aka spiders’ food – inside your home. “To minimise the chance of being infested by the arthropods, simply take care of the household rubbish,” Panther Pest Control says.
Water
Some spiders don’t even require water but if there are any which do, they will be attracted to water coming from sink taps or bathtubs. Panther Pest Control explained: “Just to be on the safe side avoid leaving any sources.”
Fruit
“Fruits also attract spiders,” Panther Pest Control said. “It’s highly possible to spot a spider crawling out of a banana or grape and the worst thing is that usually venomous spiders hide inside fruits. Always take a close look at what you put in the shopping bag.”
Good hiding places
It is rare to see spiders in highly visible spots. Panther Pest Control added: “They prefer corners, crevices, dark and less used spaces.”
Clearing away any rubbish or clutter can help reduce the number of hiding spots for spiders in your home. Regularly vacuuming in these areas can also help.
