England followers slam Lee Carsley for ‘making it about himself’ throughout anthem

England fans have slammed interim manager Lee Carsely as he refused to sing the national anthem ahead of kick-off against Finland in the Nations League.

The Three Lions boss picked up his first victory against the Republic of Ireland last week but made headlines for all the wrong reasons after he didn’t sing the national anthem before the game.

Carsley who was born in England but represented Ireland, never sang the Irish anthem during his playing days and has confessed that he’s too focused on the game which is why he opts not to sing.

He’s not the first manager to not sing the national anthem, it’s not helping him win supporters over – who were already sceptical about the FA’s decision to appoint the inexperienced 50-year-old as the interim gaffer.

The Birmingham-born coach caused a stir on social media ahead of kick-off against Finland, with the TV cameras highlighting his refusal to sing once again.

Supporters were quick to label him a “disgrace”, with one posting on X: “Lee Carsley just made it all about himself! It’s not about you. It’s about a team and about your country! Sing the anthem!”

A few of Carsley’s fellow Brummies also aired their frustration with the former Blues player online, saying: “Lee Carsley. Born in Birmingham. Sing the national anthem or get f****d”

However, a few have had enough of all the talk about him singing or not signing the anthem with another posting: “Was it necessary to linger on Lee Carsley not singing the anthem? Get over it ffs.”

While the FA are likely to look elsewhere for a permanent appointment, it doesn’t phase Carsley who has insisted that he doesn’t want the job full-time.
