Liverpool ace breaks silence on brutal sub and Arne Slot ‘kick up bottom’
Liverpool’s rising star Jarell Quansah has spilled the beans on being subbed off at half-time in their 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town by new manager Arne Slot.
Quansah, 21, keen on stamping his reputation as one of Europe’s top young defenders, admits the Dutchman’s choice to hook him after just 45 minutes in Ipswich’s first game since promotion was spot on, despite it being a bruising experience.
Although he was picked to flaunt his skills on August 17, Quansah’s stint on the pitch was cut short due to what Slot perceived as losing one too many tussles with forward Liam Delap.

Having been on the sidelines since that day, the Warrington-born centre-back hasn’t seen any action since, with Liverpool winning all three of their Premier League games so far under Slot. But Quansah isn’t sweating about his absence from the pitch right now.
Fresh off being named man-of-the-match for the England Under-21 squad following their stalemate with Northern Ireland, Quansah shared candid insights about that pivotal moment when he was yanked from the Liverpool line-up.

Speaking to The Times, Quansah said: “It’s a long season, I have the whole season to prove myself,” further confessing the substitution was a bit of a jolt intended to steer him right.
“It’s given me a kick up the backside, you could say. I’ll keep grafting on the training pitch and that’s all it is. It’s never a nice feeling as a footballer to be subbed off at half-time but at the end of the day it was the gaffer’s decision and it was the right one,” reports the Liverpool Echo.
“The next day he pulled me in. Basically, he just went through his mindset and why he made the decision, ultimately. I think the reasons he gave me were fair enough. It obviously worked because we won, so I can only focus on myself, improve myself, kick forward and move on to the next game. I’m staying ready for whenever it comes.”
He also shared his ambitious goals, stating: “It’s always been the goal since I was young, I’ve always wanted to be the best in the world in my position and so I’m striving for that and it doesn’t matter how long it takes.
“I’m not going to get too disheartened if it’s not 2026 (World Cup), I know what I need to do and hopefully I keep improving. The more and more games I play, it will come and it’s about taking that opportunity.”
