Chelsea star slapped with driving ban for six months in double offence

A Premier League ace worth a whopping £100 million has received a driving ban after being found guilty of a motoring offence.

Enzo Fernandez, a Chelsea FC midfielder, was fined £3,020 and banned from driving for six months after being found guilty on two charges of failing to identify the driver of a Porsche Cayenne.

The car was caught breaking the speed limit on Carmarthen Road in Swansea on December 20, 2023 by South Wales Police, and running a red light on Church Street, Llanelli on November 28 last year by Dyfed-Powys Police.

It has not been proven that World Cup winner Fernadez was at the wheel on either occasion, but paperwork named him as the car’s owner, while he also failed to reply to police requests for information.

The Argentine playmaker didn’t appear at Llanelli Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday when they handed him his sentence, having been found guilty in his absence at two hearings earlier this year.

Court papers gave two addresses for Fernandez, one at Chelsea’s training ground in Surrey, another in Kingston-upon-Thames.

Presiding magistrate Wyn Evans said: “We are dealing with two matters of failing to give the driver’s identity which has been proved in Enzo Fernandez’s absence.”

He was charged £1,000 and £110 in police costs for the offence in Llanelli and a further £1,000 charge, £800 victim surcharge and £110 in police costs for the offence in Swansea.

Each incident cost him six penalty points, coming to a total of 12.

Fernandez has been slapped with a six-month driving ban due to an accumulation of nine penalty points for speeding.

Fernandez, who clinched the World Cup with Argentina in December 2022, made his move to Chelsea in January 2023 for £106.8 million – a record-breaking transfer fee for a British club at the time.

Before his big move to London, Fernandez played for Benfica, having joined the Portuguese side from River Plate for a modest £8.8 million in the summer of 2022. He only played 29 games for them before making his way to the Premier League.
