Girl was dying whereas watching Tipping Point however her mum ‘went to pub’ as a substitute

A mum left her dying daughter to watch the TV quiz show Tipping Point while she nipped off to the pub, an inquiry heard.

Sharon Goldie, aged 49, snubbed her 13-year-old daughter Robyn’s need for medical attention, shrugging it off as just a “stomach bug“, but she would soon die.

During the fatal accident inquiry at Hamilton Sheriff Court, South Lanarkshire, heart-wrenching details emerged that Goldie brushed aside her duty of care to sip drinks at a local watering hole.

When she returned home Goldie and her friend Jim Duffy sat outside drinking, but when he checked on Robyn she was not breathing and rigor mortis had set in.

In evidence, Goldie said she thought Robyn was “exaggerating” her symptoms in July 2018 and had left her in the house to go out, reports Glasgow Live.

In harrowing testimony, she insisted: “I thought she was getting better and didn’t need to go to hospital. I told her only people with heart attacks need ambulances and I didn’t think it was a hospital job. I thought it was a stomach bug and paracetamol and ibuprofen would be what the doctor would give her,” reports the Mirror.

Robyn had been struck by peritonitis, leading to a deadly perforated duodenal ulcer. Goldie added: “I knew she was unwell but didn’t think she needed an ambulance. I left her watching Tipping Point doubled up on the couch, she liked Tipping Point, and I locked the door behind me and left.”

Goldie, from Kilsyth, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison in 2020 after confessing to wilful ill treatment and neglect between July 2017 and July 2018. She admitted to failing to provide Robyn with sufficient food, clothing or heating, physically abusing her, and allowing her to smoke cannabis and consume alcohol.

She also confessed to exposing her to unsanitary living conditions, including cat urine and faeces, which resulted in her contracting fleas. The inquiry previously heard allegations that Goldie advised Robyn not to report an alleged rape as it would result in a medical examination and court appearance.

Goldie claimed Robyn was “boasting” about losing her virginity following the alleged assault by a 14-year-old boy in a caravan near Bellshill, Lanarkshire.

She stated: “She was boasting about it, it wasn’t a complaint but I was having to try and calm myself down because my blood was boiling. I told her she would be examined by doctors, have a lot to do with the court and the press would then get involved and it would follow her about all of her life.”

The inquiry was initiated by Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC, who ruled that the circumstances surrounding Robyn’s death raised ‘serious public concern’. The investigation, presided over by Sheriff Linda Nicolson, is ongoing.
