Kate Garraway’s daughter Darcey comforts brother Billy on the NTAs

Kate Garraway’s daughter Darcey, 18, was seen sweetly comforting younger brother Billy, 15, on Wednesday night as their mother accepted the Authored Documentary award at the National Television Awards.

The teen tenderly rubbed her brother’s shoulders twice after the broadcaster’s documentary Derek’s Story – which followed the final year of their late father’s life –  was announced the winner.

Looking stylish in a sleek, polka dot gown, Darcey proved to be a rock for her family as she was also seen taking her mum’s hand as she lead them to the stage to accept the prize.

Darcey then stood by her brother’s side and kept a watchful eye on their mother as Kate, 57, gave an emotional speech in which she dedicated her prize to all the carers.

Political lobbyist Derek died in January at the age of 56 after contracting Covid-19 in 2020 and never recovering.

Kate began her moving speech: ‘This is a bittersweet one isn’t it? It’s very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy.

‘I promised them they didn’t have to say anything. We’re halfway through the first year of firsts really.

‘A first Easter and first birthdays, without Derek. It’s so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him.

Derek had previously been the star of documentaries Kate Garraway: Finding Derek (2021) and Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek (2022).

The NTAs come after Kate remembered Derek on Tuesday for their 20th wedding anniversary, telling fans she is ‘so lucky’ to have known his love.

She shared a video with her 1.3million Instagram followers explaining what the day meant to her.

She began: ‘Today would’ve been my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek.

‘I mean, it still is my 20th wedding anniversary to Derek, it’s just one of those days, that we’ve talked about, like Christmas to come, Easter. All of those things – his birthday – where you really feel a punch to the stomach.

This one, particularly, I’ve been feeling really sorry for myself, I’m afraid, because it’s such a personal thing.

‘The others are as much, when he was here, made about the family, friends, all of that, whereas this day is so particularly special to him and I (sic).

‘The fact that he’s not here makes me feel very sad and notice his absence like a roaring, roaring train.

‘I’ve been the leaning into the grief, as everyone says you have to, and I’ve been re-reading some of his lovely anniversary messages on previous cards which I feel so grateful to have had that kind of romance and love in my life. I’m so lucky.’

It certainly was a family affair as Kate had earlier walked the red carpet with her children at The O2 London ahead of the event.

The Good Morning Britain host cut a glamorous figure for the event in a black blazer with a silver sequinned collar which she wore with matching trousers.

The broadcaster added height to her frame with black heels with a silver embellishment and she also carried a silver clutch bag.

Letting her blonde locks fall loose over her shoulders, Kate completed her look with a pair of drop earrings.

Darcey wore a dark grey polka dot dress with a leg split while Billy was dressed in a black suit.

Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story is the third project from the GMB star to pick up a nomination in the best authored documentary category

It follows on from her previous two documentaries about his Covid battle and her own struggles navigating the care system, which won in 2021 and 2022.

Kate was up against David Beckham’s documentary Beckham, Robbie Williams’ self-titled series, Rhod Gilbert’s A Pain In The Neck and Rose Ayling-Ellis’ Signs For Change.

This year’s National Television Awards took place at their usual stomping ground at The O2 London in Peninsula Square and will broadcast live from 8pm on ITV.

The NTAs have been at the O2 every year since 2010, with the exception of the rescheduled 2022 bash in Wembley.

Comedian Joel Dommett hosted the awards ceremony for the fourth time.

Ant and Dec were awarded the Best Presenter honour for a record 23rd time as they led the big winners on the night.

While Ant and Dec continued their record-breaking winning streak, it was Mr Bates Vs The Post Office who were the big champions of the night, with three prizes.

Toby Jones was awarded the prize for Serial Drama Performance for his critically-acclaimed performance in the series.

In his speech, the actor offered his congratulations to the real-life Post Office campaigner Sir Alan Bates, after he tied the knot with his longtime partner Susanne on Richard Branson‘s private island at the weekend.

Despite a year plagued with scandals and controversy, Strictly Come Dancing scooped the prize for Talent Show.

Amid fears for the show’s future over accusations of abuse aimed at professional dancers Giovanni Pernice and Graziano Di Prima, the BBC show beat out Britain’s Got Talent, The Great British Bake Off, Masterchef and The Voice to take one of the night’s big prizes.

The NTAs are voted for by the public, with the win for Strictly a clear sign that viewers are still rooting for the show as it prepares to return for its 20th series on Saturday night.
