Liverpool legend dealing with jail as Champions League winner accused of tax evasion
Liverpool legend Djibril Cisse has been accused of tax evasion in France.
Cisse, who lifted the Champions League with the Reds, spent two seasons on Merseyside – also clinching the FA Cup – before he left for Marseille in 2006. The flamboyant striker would later return to English shores to turn out for QPR and Sunderland.
The Frenchman has since turned his attention to music after hanging up his boots, by pursing a career as a DJ. However, he now stands accused of tax evasion, with prosecutors telling a court on Wednesday they want him to receive a one-year suspended jail term and £85,000 fine.

The 43-year-old former France international wasn’t present at Bastia criminal court on Wednesday, with the court due to give its verdict on November 13.
The court heard an account set up to handle Cisse’s tax affairs was £465,000 in debt. Prosecutors said the Reds cult hero was guilty of tax evasion for not having declared this sum to France’s equivalent of HMRC.
Cisse also stands accused of owing a further £195,000 from failing to declare VAT revenue on his income from image rights. The Frenchman’s lawyer, Malcolm Mouldaia, told the court: “He has been going through this case for years.
“He owes huge sums to the tax authorities. There can be no case of money laundering, as there is no tax fraud on his part.
“He has had problems with his accountancy firm, as they have not handled his case well – and they have not kept him informed.”
Cisse last played for Panathinaikos Chicago stateside – but he didn’t make an appearance for them. He rocked up in Gerard Pique’s Kings League’s in 2023 – a seven-a-side competition – where he played for Los Troncos FC.
