Great information for wine followers as having plonk together with your meal is sweet for you
Here’s some corking news – drinking wine with a meal is good for you.
A new scientific study has found that having some plonk with your grub can have health benefits. Boffins discovered it can also reduce the risk of mortality for older boozers.
The findings have been published online on JAMA Network after assessing 135,103 older drinkers from the UK’s Biobank. Those who liked to guzzle some vino with food had lower cancer and cardiovascular disease mortality.

They concluded that the lowering “of mortality observed for wine preference and drinking only during meals requires further investigation, as it may mostly reflect the effect of healthier lifestyles, slower alcohol absorption, or non-alcoholic components of beverages.”
Although the scientists focused mainly on the risk of higher mortality with low-level drinking, they admitted that those who drank wine with a meal did appear to see benefits.
They added: “Cancer death for low-risk drinkers versus occasional drinkers was attenuated and even lost among individuals with these drinking patterns.”
The report is expected to be welcomed by the under-pressure drinks industry.
It’s already reeling after other recent studies claimed that red wine should be dropped from the Mediterranean diet.
Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation has stated there was no safe level of alcohol consumption.
And Canada has made a recommendation of restricting boozing to just two drinks a week.
