Huge asteroid the dimensions of a skyscraper to go Earth subsequent week

NASA has revealed that a “potentially hazardous” asteroid that’s the same size as a skyscraper is due to fly past Earth on Tuesday, and scarily enough it’s going to get pretty close.

The supersized asteroid, known as ‘2024 ON’, has a diameter of between 721 and 1,575 feet (220 to 480 metres), according to estimates from NASA and will be hurtling towards us at an incredibly fast pace.

But, despite flying towards Earth at 19,842 mph, which is equivalent to 26 times the speed of sound , 2024 ON is due to nip past us, rather than directly into us.

It will still be 0.62 million miles from us

Although the asteroid is estimated to be coming fairly close to Earth, it will still be 0.62 million miles from us, which equates to around 2.6 times the average distance between Earth and the moon.

While NASA has dubbed the asteroid as being “potentially hazardous” they deem all space objects that come within 120 million miles of us to be ‘near-Earth objects’ that could be a hazard

While NASA has dubbed the asteroid as being “potentially hazardous” they deem all space objects that come within 120 million miles of us to be ‘near-Earth objects’ that could be a hazard.

But even if 2024 ON was to make contact with Earth, it wouldn’t cause the kind of cataclysmic event like the 7.5 mile asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 66 million years ago.
