Real motive individuals worsen hangovers within the US – and it is not what you assume
Hangovers are the great leveller – everyone gets them. If you’ve overdone it the night before, chances are you’re feeling awful the next day.
But in some countries, you stand a much better chance of avoiding a hideous katzenjammer scenario compared to others.
In the US, the morning after is reportedly a far more painful event than it is in the UK. There are several reasons why someone necking shots of tequila in New York City will wake up feeling worse than someone in London having done the same thing.

There’s lots of quality news coming out of the US.
Redditors took to their platform to give their take on this puzzling state of affairs.
“Just came back from a nearly month-long visit to different parts of the UK,” someone from the US wrote on the platform. “I drank extremely heavily. I never once woke up with a hangover that disabled me from doing anything the following day.
“Upon arriving home, I drank, and have now woken up with a seriously awful hangover. What’s the deal?”
People flocked in the comment section to answer the query, with one major “reason why” emerging.
“North and South America use Corn Syrup in their alcoholic beverages as sweeteners, whereas Europe often uses Sugar Beet – this is what’s making your hangovers suck,” suggested one person.
“Yeah that is the added sugar here,” another person agreed. “Look at the bread you buy, I bet it has 2-5 grams of sugar per serving.”
They added: “Also there is other added s*** in there which your body does not process well. Breads in Europe and simple and have things like low processed wheat, water, butter, yeast, eggs, etc… you know things easy for your body to use and process.”
Despite the amount of people saying how sugar plays a pivotal role in a bad hangover, many others posited a different view. In the US, bartenders typically “free pour” shots of liquor into drinks because there aren’t the same laws governing the amounts of alcohol per drink.
That means you’re likely having much stronger drinks in the US than you are over here.
“In the UK the amount of alcohol in a drink is specified by law and is quite low compared to what an American bartender would pour,” someone wrote.
“In the UK a shot is 25 ml. That’s tiny. US shot is more like 40 mil, and sometimes more,” another person said.
One left-of-field theory as to why Americans have worse headaches after a night on the lash was that “the secret ingredient [in US drinks] is freedom and eagle blood.” The Daily Star cannot verify whether this is the case or not.
