World’s costliest doorstop is definitely an historic rock with enormous price ticket

An elderly woman didn’t realise she was sitting on a gold mine as the so-called rock she was using as a DOOR STOP was actually worth more than £800,000.

The Romanian native found the rock in a stream in the Southeast of the country and brought it home to put it to what she thought was good use. In true form to the phrase ‘one man’s trash is another’s treasure,’ she didn’t know she was sitting on a fortune so to speak.

The elderly woman was oblivious that her discovery was actually one of the most impressive, intact chunks of a precious gemstone in the entire world. The amber chunk has since been estimated as being worth $1,100,000, around £840,000.

From Colti, the finder was lucky that the gemstone even evaded jewel thieves who onc targetted her home,” Science Alert reports. It said the gemstone had such a humble task of holding the door open, they hadn’t even considered it was of value.

The finder never knew just how much it was worth

At 7.7 pounds in weight, for the remainder of the woman’s life, the precious piece of amber continued to serve its given purpose and it was only following her death that a relative who inherited her home had it looked at having thought there was more to it.

He then sold the amber to the Romanian state, which had it appraised by experts at the Museum of History in Krakow, Poland, and found it was between 38 and 70 million years old.

“Its discovery represents a great significance both at a scientific level and at a museum level,” Daniel Costache, director of the Provincial Museum of Buzau, told El Pais. It was classified as a national treasure of Romania and is now located at the Provincial Museum of Buzau and has been since 2022.
