Man with bucket and spade baffled after seashore gap mistaken for ‘cosmic crater’

Social media users were left in stitches after a TV report bizarrely suggested that a hole dug by a man at the beach was the result of a “aftermath of a cosmic event”.

The video, which went viral on both X and Reddit, showed a bloke digging a hole at Portmarnock Beach in North Dublin using a child’s bucket and spade.

The same hole later featured in a news report, leaving beachgoers puzzled as they believed it to be the work of extraterrestrial forces.

He added: “A local astronomy enthusiast is hoping the crater in Portmarnock could be the aftermath of a cosmic event.”

The reporter continued: “It’s a huge, mysterious crater that looks out of this world. But is it? ” The peculiar hole on Portmarnock Beach caught the attention of local astrophysics enthusiast Dave Kennedy.

He was convinced that the small but heavy rock inside it had fallen from the sky. The reporter even interviewed an alleged expert who said: ” As you can tell by here, there’s a scorch mark on this side here.”

He added: “So that would have been at the angle that it came down at, and it is weighty.”

He concluded: “I’m not sure if it’s composition, but we’re definitely going to have to find out..”

The reporter wrapped up the segment by stating that the “striking hole soon caught the attention of passers by” and that “many are hoping that what they’re witnessing is the aftermath of a once in a lifetime cosmic event.”

But viewers were left in stitches over the peculiar report, which was shared with the caption: “Lads I’m in bits.”

“Virgin Media news is after reporting on a hole on Portmarnock beach that ‘Could be the aftermath of a cosmic event’.”

“Some fella’s literally dug it the day before with a kid’s shovel The way your man was talking about the rock being an asteroid had me in tears.”

Another user quipped: “Whatever drugs Dave is on, I want some.”

A third chimed in: “Just a couple blokes with spades on the beach innit’.”
