Movie followers give documentary uncommon 99% Rotten Tomatoes viewers rating

Documentary enthusiasts gave the controversial film Am I Racist? a 99 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes just days after its release.

The score was determined by nearly 3,000 reviews from Rotten Tomato users who’ve seen the documentary.

Podcaster and The Daily Wire columnist Matt Walsh went undercover as a DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) trainee and participated in social experiments.

One of the participants Walsh spoke with was White Fragility author Robin DiAngelo, who called the film a ‘Borat-style mocumentary.’

Am I Racist? was released in over 1,500 theaters on September 13 and made almost $5 million during its opening weekend.

Walsh decided to go undercover after a seminar host and its participants asked him to leave a ‘Grieving White Privilege’ workshop.

During this time, he earned a DEI certification and interacted with individuals at various places, including a biker bar.

‘There is an ugly truth exposed regarding this ideology, and it is provided directly by the individuals advocating this divisive mindset,’ a Rotten Tomato audience member insisted.

‘Ultimately a very positive message and resetting of how much we all really do have in common.’

Others were impressed with the comedy behind the documentary and its ‘Borat-style’ approach.

‘Great and important content, delivered in a way that only Matt Walsh can,’ a movie-goer wrote.

‘Most out-loud reactions including laughing and gasping I have ever heard at a movie theater. Everyone needs to see this movie.’

Despite dozens of five-star reviews, some audience members did have problems with the documentary, and a one-star reviewer even called it ‘garbage.’

‘It’s a smart documentary in the way it examines an unskilled, privileged individual, not being smart enough to be embarrassed by the pain they are causing,’ a Rotten Tomato member wrote.

That audience member, along with at least three other viewers, then accused Walsh of being racist.

Another Rotten Tomato audience member wrote: ‘It is ok for the film to not agree with that is happening but it is not ok to do it without having real discussions with people where both sides share their views with respect.’

Several Rotten Tomato and X users praised the film for its comedy, and more than one person approved of Walsh's undercover work

Several X users also chimed in with praise for the film.

‘The best was when Matt Walsh went to the South, and met the least racist people there. Those people were great,’ an X user wrote.

One X user tweeted: ‘Am I Racist – A perfectly fine movie. It has hilarious moments and I like how the movie punches up. The people getting interviewed dig their own graves and it’s insightful into their worldviews.’
