Neville Southall ‘effectively achieved, he is 13’ star unrecognisable from Michael Owen clip
You might not know or recognise Jamie Hutchinson these days – but you’ve seen him before.
Back in 1999, Hutchinson had the small task of denying the efforts of then Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen for his Michael Owen Soccer Skills show. The shot-stopper had the help of Everton and Wales legend Neville Southall, who quipped a now legendary line, which went on to go viral on social media more than a decade later.
“Well done, he’s 13,” Southall said, as a not-too-humble Owen wheeled off in celebration, having managed to score past a child. However, 23 years after the shoot, Hutchinson and Southall – who celebrates his 66th birthday today (September 16) – crossed paths again, with the latter posting a photo of the pair on X (then Twitter).

In the image, Hutchinson could be seen wearing a goalkeeper shirt with the same orange and black design as the one he sported in the original clip. Meanwhile, he has swapped his short ginger hair for a bald scalp, leaving him unrecognisable from two decades ago.
Owen was appearing in the video fresh off the back of his breakout performances at the 1998 World Cup and consecutive Premier League golden boot wins. He would also go on to win the Ballon d’Or in 2001.

As for Hutchinson, at the time of filming he had been keeping goal for Brazilian Soccer School, an academy project which produced former England defender Micah Richards.
He admitted years later that it “wasn’t ideal” to go up against Owen after the footage of goalkeeping great Southall’s response went viral on social media.
Speaking in 2016, via talkSPORT, he explained: “Being the goalkeeper on a programme headlined by a striker wasn’t exactly ideal for me.

“It was made clear that it wouldn’t make good filming if the goalkeeper was saving all the shots taken by the other kids after they had been coached by Michael.”
He has even said that he would be happy to star in a similar video again, adding in 2017: “I would 100% love to film it again, with a pair of gloves that actually fit and me being able to touch the crossbar. Hopefully there’d be a better outcome…”
