She’s one of the Hollywood’s finest acting talents, yet Meryl Streep still found herself compared to the most unflattering of items on Sunday evening.
The Oscar-winning star, 75, was in attendance as the 76th annual Primetime Emmy Awards got underway at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles when her on-screen proficiency was played for laughs.
Presenting the award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series, for which Streep was nominated courtesy of her starring role in Only Murders In The Building, Rob McElhenney and wife Kaitlin Olson compared her to a jockstrap.
‘Ladies and gentlemen, we are here to honor the comedic performances that hold everything in place. They show crucial support when it’s really needed,’ McElhenney told guests while announcing the nominees.
Chiming in, Olson quipped: ‘Much like a jockstrap… what you were describing sounds very much like a jockstrap.’

‘No it doesn’t!’ McElhenney barked, adding: ‘These roles make sure everything stays secure, without this support the whole package falls apart… alright, this does sound like a jockstrap.’
With the camera panning to Streep as she sat in the audience alongside Martin Short, Olson joked: ‘Yeah, are you calling Meryl Streep a jockstrap?’
‘No! I’m so sorry Meryl,’ he said, feigning upset
Meanwhile Streep appeared shocked as she looked down at her lap before quietly mouthing “Oh God” in mock horror.
The award was subsequently won by Liza Colón-Zayaas for her role in The Bear. with the actress beating Streep, Carol Burnett, Hannah Einbinder, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph to the accolade.
However viewers were divided over McElhenney and Olson’s scripted gag, with a handful taking to X, formerly Twitter, later that night to express their opinions.
‘I don’t know who wrote the #EmmyAwards tonight, but the dialog is soooooo cringe. They just compared Meryl Streep to a jock strap. Yeah, it’s that bad,’ wrote one.
While a second added: ‘Meryl Streep reacting to being called a jockstrap was amazing.’
Elsewhere, a third posted: ‘I can’t believe @RMcElhenney just called Meryl Streep a jockstrap.’

Hacks beat The Bear in a major upset for the top comedy honor as Shogun swept the board in record-breaking fashion for the drama categories at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards which featured a star-studded red carpet.
The HBO comedy starring Jean Smart – who earned Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series – and Hannah Einbinder ended the night on top with a win in the Outstanding Comedy Series category over the FX series at the gala event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.
Meanwhile Shogun broke the all-time record for a single season of TV with 18 as the show not only earned top honor Outstanding Drama Series but also Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor In A Drama Series for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, respectively.
When it came to the limited or anthology series categories, it was Netflix smash-hit Baby Reindeer which earned Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series in addition to Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Richard Gadd and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Jessica Gunning.
This year’s ceremony was held less than a year after the 75th edition of the show which took place this past January after being moved back from its intended September 2023 date due to the writers and actors strikes.
