Easy methods to maintain spiders out of your property as arachnids enter ‘mating season’

Spider season is creeping up, and for those with a fear of the eight-legged critters or just a dislike for them, it’s time to look for ways to keep them at bay.

Lynsie Crombie, known as Lynsey Queen Of Clean, has gathered a bunch of spider deterrent methods for those looking to keep their homes arachnid-free.

Taking to Instagram, Lynsey shared a video with the caption: “Spider season [spider emoji] Autumn tends to mark the start of spider mating season, which means you are likely to spot these creepy crawlies popping up all over your home. As well as keeping your home clean, check for spiderwebs [spider web emoji] and follow the simple tips.”

One of Lynsey’s top tips is to catch and release spiders back into the wild, reports the Express. She advises: “It’s spider season guys, so grab yourself one of these really handy spider catchers, and no harm comes to the spider.”

But if you’re not keen on the catch-and-release method, Lynsey has other tricks up her sleeve to stop spiders from entering in the first place.

A key tip from Lynsey is to use cinnamon sticks or powder around the house, particularly at entry points, because spiders can’t stand the smell. To reinforce the barrier, Lynsey also recommends lighting cinnamon-scented candles to ensure the spiders keep their distance.

Spiders also can’t stand the scent of peppermint, with Lynsey advising: “Dilute some peppermint oil into a spray bottle and use this to spray all around your entranceways. This is going to stop them coming in, as again, they hate the small.”

She also recommends pouring boiling water down your sink’s plughole to deter spiders from sneaking in.

To keep those eight-legged intruders out, she advises sealing the plughole with a plug or, if you’re lacking one, an upside-down glass for easy removal of any pests that do make it through.
