Mum of woman who died watching TV eliminated door so teen might hear her have intercourse

A mum accused of neglecting her desperately ill daughter had intentionally removed her bedroom door so the child could hear her have sex, an inquiry heard.

Sharon Goldie, 49, believed her 13-year-old daughter Robyn was exaggerating her symptoms when she left her on the couch to watch quiz show Tipping Point to go out to the pub.

When she returned from her pub session, Goldie found the girl unresponsive of the sofa at their Wishaw, Scotland home. Despite this, she continued to drink outside the house with another person.

When she finally checked on her daughter, Robyn had stopped breathing. The girl died from peritonitis, a life-threatening swelling of the stomach lining, and a perforated duodenal ulcer in 2018.

The shocking circumstance of Robyn’s death led to an inquiry, where it was revealed Goldie was often drunk and “entertaining men at home”, The Express reports.

It was revealed that Robyn’s bedroom door had been taken off and never replaced, leading to suspicions that the young girl was forced to witness her mum have sex with men she brought home.

Robyn reportedly informed social workers that she had witnessed her mum engage in sex acts with various men at their home. This alarming information prompted concerns for Robyn’s safety to be escalated to social services.

Independent social worker Maggie Mellon, who was engaged in the case said: “There was some disturbing evidence being known such as that Robyn did not have a bedroom door which had been taken off by Sharon and had never been put back again.

“Her mother had been entertaining men at home drunk and Robyn had been exposed to her mother’s sexual activity and there were adult men in the house behaving inappropriately towards Robyn in the home.”

In 2020, Goldie was sentenced to three year and six months in prison, after admitting to wilful ill treatment and neglect of her daughter between July 2017 and July 2018.

The court heard how she had committed multiple offences, including failing to provide adequate food, clothing, or heating, allowing Robyn to consume alcohol and smoke cannabis, and made her live in squalid conditions that led to the teen contracting fleas from cat urine and faeces, which Goldie also accepted guilt for.

The court also heard how Goldie dissuaded Robyn from reporting an alleged rape, warning of the following court proceedings..

The Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC has called for an inquiry into Robyn’s death. It will look into how the girls death could have been averted and the family’s involvement with social services, according to MailOnline reports.
