Ryan Reynolds responds after Paul Mullin ‘pulls out of biting Birmingham ace’

Wrexham forward Paul Mullin has hilariously addressed claims he considered biting an opponent during a 3-1 defeat to Birmingham City.

In a match labelled as the ‘Hollywood derby’ due to Wrexham’s actor owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and Tom Brady‘s minority stake in the Blues, it was the NFL legend’s team that claimed victory and three crucial points in a face-off between two undefeated League One teams at St Andrew’s on Monday night.

Yet, an odd incident occurred prior to Birmingham’s Krystian Bielik’s red card for a second bookable offence. Mullin appeared to seriously contemplate – and even attempt – to bite the leg of Birmingham’s left-back Alec Cochrane, reports the Mirror.

Following a collision between Mullin and Cochrane, replays seemed to show the striker pondering over taking a bite out of the 24-year-old’s leg. Fans were quick to question the incident on social media, with one posting on X: “PAUL MULLIN WENT TO BITE HIM?! He definitely remembered there were cameras…”

Mullin, 29, quote tweeted the post and the goal machine from Merseyside had a comical response. He said: “I know what it looks like.. but it didn’t happen. Although you can tell his leg was thinking about attacking my mouth.”

That reply definitely amused his boss Reynolds, as the actor who gave Mullins a cameo in his box office smash Deadpool & Wolverine as the character ‘Welshpool’ replied. He posted two crying laughing emojis in response either side of a crossed swords emoji and added “#Welshpool”.

The controversial moment was one of several intriguing incidents involving Mullin towards the end of the heated match. He caused a massive ruckus after getting heated over a challenge, leading to a full-on pitch confrontation between Wrexham and Birmingham players. The drama didn’t stop there, with another scuffle breaking out shortly after.

Post-match, Cochrane gave his two cents to Sky Sports about the on-pitch clash, saying: “I don’t really know to be honest, I was just on the floor. Handbags out of nothing… a load of nonsense really.”

Wrexham’s co-owner McElhenney and Birmingham’s boss Brady were spotted in the stands, with the NFL icon joined by none other than David Beckham. Tagging along with Beckham was his old mate Gary Neville from their Manchester United and England days.

Before kick-off, Wrexham were topping League One charts, edging out Charlton Athletic on goal difference thanks to their stellar start of four wins and a draw from five. Birmingham were not far behind in sixth, sitting on 11 points, but their win against Wrexham has now put them hot on the Welsh team’s heels, only separated by goal difference and with a match still in hand.
