‘Homely’ nuclear bunker with ‘unused rest room’ on sale for £15,000 has weird pas

A historic nuclear bunker has hit the market, sparking a flurry of interest online.

The Royal Observer Corps’ bunker, built in the 1950s post-war era, is one of only 1,500 ever constructed. Nestled 14 feet underground in the village of Wormhill near Buxton on the edge of the Peak District, the bunker is touted as being ‘in excellent condition, clean and dry’, with some ‘interesting original items’ still intact – including an ‘unused toilet’.

SDL Property Auctions have listed the property for sale on Rightmove with a guide price of £15,000. The bunker is set to go under the hammer in an online auction on September 26.

The listing states: “Fantastic opportunity to buy a piece of past war British history. The once in a generation opportunity is to buy a ROC Nuclear Bunker otherwise known as A Royal Observer post.”

The report continues: “This particular site was one of many built in the 1950s and was designed to provide protective accommodation for three observers to survive a nuclear attack, they were expected to report on the nuclear bursts and on the fall out of a nuclear attack.

“They were provided with enough food and water for fourteen days and had a landline and radio communications available to them.”, reports the Manchester Evening News.

“Most of these sites were decommissioned and sold off in 1993 and we have been informed that many were bought up by telecom companies and now are sites for mobile phone masts as they were built as telecommunication posts so they are positioned in very favourable locations.”

Images captured from inside the bunker reveal a bedroom adorned with curtains and a yellow crushed velvet duvet still in place. A log burner and a rug also feature in the room.

The sleeping area measures 14 foot by 7 foot, while the storage area is 7 foot by 2 foot.

SDL Property Auctions further adds: “The bunker is secure, dry and in its original condition, the current owner has refurbished and decorated it in readiness for its new owner. There are wall to wall velvet curtains, a cream carpet, a made bed, a log burner, storage and even a rug to make it as homely as possible.”

“The owner has advised there is an unused and still boxed chemical toilet, they also recommend for the wood burning stove to be serviced before being used due to safety purposes. Viewings are available but also click on the virtual tour to watch our National Valuer Jims video with commentary too.”
