Bride and groom cost friends £2k to attend marriage ceremony – and drinks aren’t included
A couple has been slammed on the internet for charging their wedding guests nearly £2,000 just to show up and that’s without a bite or sip included. The UK wedding took an unexpected turn when attendees, who had already RSVP’d, received a thank you email with a sneaky payment link at the bottom, suggesting they “Click here for payment”.
Guest Jack* initially mistook it for a honeymoon fund link and didn’t think much of it. However, curiosity got the better of him and upon clicking, he was greeted with a request for almost £2k.
Believing it to be a scam, he rang the venue, only to be told by staff that “Sophie* and Jeff* thank you for your contribution to enabling them to have their dream wedding.”

The shock came post-RSVP confirmation, leaving Jack gobsmacked but willing to drain his savings to be part of their day. At the wedding, Jack aimed to recoup some value at the free bar, but his plan hit a snag when he discovered even refreshments weren’t covered, costing him another £30 plus a mandatory £200 “tip to the venue” imposed by the bride and groom.
“He was then informed by the venue that the bride and groom had requested every guest be charged this amount as a tip for the venue. Note this is in the UK where tipping the venue is not a thing that happens. Jack had no money left from rinsing his savings for the wedding that he had to negotiate a lower tip amount with the venue,” Jack’s mate spilled the beans on Reddit, reports the Mirror.
“After the wedding, Jack checked the cost of the venue and calculated that the cost had been spread amongst the guests but NOT the bride and groom, so they had basically got a free wedding out of it. Not only did the bride and groom pass on the costs of a ridiculously priced venue to the guests, after people had RSVP’d, essentially putting the venue above guest attendance, but then they passed on the cost of a tip to the guests WITHOUT TELLING THEM, as a required charge on check out. I’ve never heard of anything so entitled in my life.”
Folks were completely gobsmacked in the comments section as they couldn’t believe the nerve of this couple. The chattering classes were quick to label it a downright scam, with one commenter venting: “Uh…Yeah, no. Once I saw the payment screen, I would have called and cancelled my RSVP. I don’t care who the bride and groom are to me. You want a specific type of wedding, pay for it yourself. What they did was downright tacky. “
“These are not friends, just users and that’s so gross. I hope someone confronted them and called them out. If you’re that cheap or broke, elope and save everyone the headache,” another chipped in.
A third quipped: “Your friend Jack and every other guest were absolute idiots for just meekly going along with this scam.”
As the saga continued, the person who spilled the tea updated their post with some juicy new deets, stating: “Confirmation from Americans in the comments that this is not a US thing, it’s also not a UK thing, it’s a confirmed entitled people thing.”
