Heavy thunderstorms to batter massive components of UK at this time with 80mm of rain falling

The UK is set to be drenched with heavy showers and thunderstorms today, as yellow weather warnings are plastered across a large chunk of the nation.

Wales, the South West, and the Midlands are in for a dreary day, with relentless rain expected to soak these areas. The Met Office slapped a yellow thunderstorm warning into effect at 1am, which will linger until the stroke of midnight.

A deluge of up to 70mm of rain could hit the affected regions today, while a whopping 80mm may pour down tomorrow, per Met Office forecasts.

Brits have already faced a barrage of thick hail, with social media flooded by snaps of rising water levels and drains struggling to cope. Bishop Cleeve in Gloucestershire saw some of the worst scenes, with videos capturing the onslaught of hailstones outside a local residence.

Despite the stormy outlook for many, it’s not all doom and gloom across the UK. The north is set to stay dry, with the northwest enjoying some cheery sunny spells, reports the Mirror.

“Not everywhere will see a thunderstorm, it’s the hit-and-miss nature of thunderstorms,” Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota explained. “One place could see torrential downpours, hail, gusty winds, and just down the road, it could be a fine and sunny day.”

She went on to say: “We start to get a second system rising from the south as we head into towards the early hours of Sunday. There is a warning in force for this area of rain as well. There is a warning in force for this area of rain as well.”

“This one is slightly different from the one on Saturday. This is a rain warning as opposed to a thunderstorm and we’ll be seeing more widespread cloud and more places will see rainfall as well.”

The yellow rain warning will be in place in the regions previously affected by thunderstorms from midnight on Sunday and will continue into midnight on Monday. A second yellow rain warning shifts eastward with much of Yorkshire, East Anglia and much of England with exception of the South West, the North West, Cumbria and the North East.

Temperatures today will be varied across the UK with highs of 23C being recorded in London and the mercury tipping over 20C in the South East, East Anglia, Yorkshire and the North West. A similar picture will emerge over the course of Sunday with temperatures hovering in the high teens in much of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The Met Office’s report for Sunday said: “Heavy outbreaks of rain moving northwards through the morning across southern England and much of Wales, turning thundery at times. Drier in the north with sunnier spells in the west.”
