Vegan mum dies after contacting horrific meat-based an infection
A vegan mum who was ‘obsessed with hygiene’ died in hospital after she contracted a horrific E coli infection.
A jury at the inquest in London has heard how Laura Farmer, 46, contracted E coli in April and, as a result, became seriously unwell, being admitted to University College Hospitals 10 days later. How the mum-of-one caught the nasty infection is a mystery as she followed a vegan diet and took ‘great pains’ with food preparation, particularly as a family member suffered from a serious allergy.
During the hearing, it was revealed that the loving mum had been at a local restaurant and had drinks at a club with her husband, Steve Farmer, before falling ill. The couple had also been to a number of local military establishments.

On April 30, following his wife’s death, Steve took to Facebook where he penned a touching tribute to his late wife, sharing the story of how the pair met. He wrote: “We travelled the world, we bought a house, she taught me to scuba dive, we learned to ski. She gave birth to [our son], a daredevil of fun and kindness, and we began our next episode.
The heartbroken dad then revealed how, the week before, he had lost ‘the most amazing woman way too soon’. After Laura was admitted to hospital she showed signs of recovery but sadly, when she was ‘thought to be in the recovery phase’ she suffered a catastrophic stroke and, despite the best efforts of her medical team, she died.
At her inquest, the Coroner for Inner North London, Mary Hassell, revealed that Laura was conscious about food hygiene, and explained that the family found her E coli diagnosis “difficult to understand”. She added: “As a family they were extremely hygiene conscious. When Ms Farmer became ill, her family members wanted to understand what had happened and to keep themselves as safe as possible.”
The coroner also raised concerns about how Steve ‘was given no advice about how to keep himself and their child safe’, which led to him becoming unwell himself and fearing that the couple’s child could end up ‘an orphan’. A jury made a determination at inquest that Laura Farmer died from a stroke caused by an E coli infection.
The day before she died, Laura was spoken to by a public health official, but due to the fact that she was seriously unwell in intensive care, little evidence was able to be obtained. Unfortunately, it still has not been determined how Laura contracted the deadly infection, leaving her heartbroken family without answers.
