UK faces a wild week with autumn’s first storm and 500-mile extensive polar plunge

Britain faces a wild week with floods, autumn’s first storm and a 500 mile-wide polar plunge – and even snow.

Gales are set to hit 60mph while temperatures are forecast to halve with -4C (25F) lows and frost. Up to five inches of rain will bring rush-hour chaos on Monday in the Midlands, with the South and North also hit.

Roads and rail lines are set for flooding as downpours fall on ground sodden by weekend washouts. Stormy spells are set to follow on Wednesday and Thursday in southern areas, with gusts due to push 60mph on coasts.

A Met Office forecaster said: “It seems likely some areas on Monday will see 60-80mm and a few places may receive 100-120mm or more. This is likely to result in travel disruption and flooding.”
