BBC viewers obsessive about new drama they ‘binge-watched in two days’

BBC viewers have discovered a new drama so gripping ‘they binge-watched it in two days’ – claiming those who loved Netflix series The Perfect Couple will lap it up.

If you are looking for a nail-biting new show, Apples Never Fall is set to surprise you with a slew of twisted mysteries that once again involve a complicated family.

The seven-part drama follows the story of the wealthy Delaney family, who is well-known by all the West Palm Beach locals for being the founders of a long-running tennis academy.

Featuring a typical ‘calm before the storm’ climax where everything is not as it seems, the drama sees parents Joy (Annette Bening) and Stan (Sam Neill) retiring from business.

The plot thickens when a wounded woman shows up at the Delaneys’ doorstep, and Joy – who is also the matriarch of the family – goes missing.

Their four children, Troy (Jake Lacy), Amy (Alison Brie), Brooke (Essie Randles) and Logan (Conor Merrigan-Turner) are then forced to reassess their whole family history, including their parents’ marriage, from a new – and perhaps more terrifying – perspective.

It has been hailed as an unnerving family drama – with several viewers promising others ‘won’t be let down’ if they watch it.

The seven-part mini drama premiered in the US on Peacock earlier this year, receiving positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, while it currently has a 6.7 score on IMDB.

For UK viewers it kicked off on BBC One on Saturday, right after Strictly Come Dancing. The weekly episodes will air at 9.15pm, with each one lasting around 45 minutes.

Created by Melanie Marnich and directed by Chris Sweeney and Dawn Shadforth, the thriller series is based on the namesake best-selling novel by Liane Moriarty – who is the author behind Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers.

Also in the cast are Georgia Flood, Jeanine Serralles, Dylan Thuraisingham and Nate Mann.

The original book is set in Australia, where the author is in fact from, but the on-screen adaptation is based in Florida – although it was shot in Australia.

Viewers were quick to compare it to the latest Netflix success starring Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, which was released on September 5.

The A-list cast of The Perfect Couple, meanwhile, also includes Dakota Fanning, Eve Hewson, Billy Howle and Meghann Fahy.

The Perfect Couple – which has been labelled as ‘ludicrously good’ – is the first Netflix series to surpass 3 billion minutes watched since the second part of Bridgerton season three aired a few months earlier in June.

The premise of the show is: ‘When one lavish wedding ends in disaster before it can even begin – with a body discovered in Nantucket Harbour just hours before the ceremony – everyone in the wedding party is suddenly a suspect’, per IMDB.

The mini-series was adapted from a 2018 novel of the same name written by Elin Hilderbrand.

Susanne Bier directed the six episodes and opened up to Deadline about the project as well as the star-studded cast and improvised scenes.

‘You have to have an amazing cast. You have to have a super-talented, enticing cast where each character is incredibly different,’ she explained to the outlet.

‘For me as a director, casting is the single most important thing that I do: figuring out how that’s going to work.’

She then added: ‘In this particular case, it was like this amazing summer camp on Cape Cod where everybody in the cast became so creatively involved. They would improvise.’

‘They would really take on each character as being themselves. It got contagious. Liev and Nicole [were] improvising, but the rest of the cast were improvising and doing crazy things. It became this magical group dynamic.’
