Drivers say they’re ‘right this moment years outdated’ after studying dashboard image which means

For those of us who drive, we often find ourselves glancing at the dashboard during our journeys to check for any new warning lights that might indicate a problem with the vehicle.

But beyond alerting us to potential issues, these dashboard symbols can also provide valuable insights about the car itself.

According to social media experts, there’s one ‘genius’ symbol that many drivers are unaware of, but knowing its meaning could save you a lot of hassle – particularly if you’re behind the wheel of a new car. This handy tip was shared on TikTok by consumer experts at Which?, who regularly offer advice to help people get the most from their cars, finances and homes.

Its latest video highlights a common symbol found on car dashboards that could save you time when it comes to refuelling. The captions on the screen read: “I was today years old when I learned what this car dashboard symbol meant.”

The symbol they’re referring to is the fuel pump icon with an arrow pointing either left or right, reports the Mirror.

Praising the ‘genius’ who came up with it, the expert explained: “Just a really simple tip for anyone driving a new or different car.

“This arrow, by the fuel pump on the dashboard, indicates what side of the car the fuel cap is on. That means no more driving around the petrol station looking like an idiot.”

This symbol, which was only invented in 1986, is a handy tool for drivers who want to avoid stopping at the wrong side of the fuel pumps – particularly if they’re in a hurry. The idea was conceived by Ford engineer Jim Moylan, who was inspired by his own experience of getting soaked in the rain while trying to locate the fuel cap.

The expert further explained: “Contrary to popular belief, the side that nozzle is on has nothing to do with the side of the fuel cap. In fact, it’s almost always pictured on the right. However, the pro pointed out that this symbol doesn’t appear in every vehicle – urging automakers to ‘sort it out’. In the video’s comments, people were astounded after finding this out, with many saying they’ll keep an eye out for it from now on.

However, the professional highlighted that this symbol isn’t present in every vehicle, urging car manufacturers to ‘sort it out’. In the comments section of the video, viewers were amazed after learning this, with many vowing to look out for it in the future.

One individual commented: “No! I didn’t know this. This will help on hire cars. All these years.”

Another confessed: “I thought it meant what side of the pump to park on originally and kept getting it wrong. Ashamed to admit how many times I did it.”
