Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor choices made after controversial Prem video games
Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor are set to return to refereeing duties in the Premier League’s sixth week.
Both will be back on the pitch this weekend following a controversy-ridden previous round of matches. Oliver was at the centre of several contentious decisions during Manchester City‘s nail-biting 2-2 draw with Arsenal, where John Stones’ last-gasp equaliser salvaged a point for Pep Guardiola’s men.
The Gunners were left seething after Leandro Trossard saw red for two bookings in the first half, the second of which was controversially given for allegedly kicking the ball away. Kyle Walker and his City colleagues were also irate when Oliver penalised the England star for being out of position just before Arsenal netted their opening goal.

Oliver is set to take up VAR duties for Chelsea’s encounter with Brighton on Saturday. He’ll be back in the thick of the action for Southampton’s Monday night clash with Bournemouth (September 30).
Meanwhile, Taylor has been reinstated as a referee after serving as the fourth official during Brighton’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest. He played a key role in persuading ref Rob Jones to show Morgan Gibbs-White a second yellow for a tackle on Joao Pedro, despite Jones initially believing Gibbs-White had won the ball fairly, reports the Mirror.

Jones ended up showing red cards to both Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo and Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, while Gibbs-White was seen shouting in Taylor’s face as he left the pitch. After a contentious match between Chelsea and Bournemouth that saw an incredible 14 yellow cards issued, Taylor was left out of the weekend’s refereeing roster.
Taylor is set to make his comeback by officiating another big game, this time with Liverpool aiming to defeat Wolves at Molineux. The Reds are the team he has refereed most frequently in his career so far, including their 3-0 triumph over Manchester United earlier in September.
On the other hand, Jones won’t be taking charge of a top-tier match in Week 6, instead serving as the fourth official for Manchester City’s visit to Newcastle. Despite this, the pressure will still be on as City aim to return to winning form on challenging ground.
In other news, Chris Kavanagh is set to oversee arguably the week’s biggest clash as a fluctuating Manchester United play host to Tottenham on Sunday. Kavanagh controversially sent off Declan Rice when Arsenal drew with Brighton earlier this season, but the upcoming Old Trafford showdown could prove to be his toughest assignment yet.
