Ex-Man Utd star has been banned after he jumped into stands to struggle followers

Former Manchester United player Sergio Romero has been banned by his club Boca Juniors after he jumped into the stands to fight one of the home fans.

The 37-year-old was between the sticks for Boca during their derby with arch-rivals River Plate at the weekend. Referred to as the Superclasico, it’s seen as one of the most important and fiercest games in the world and often attracts trouble.

River Plate took the lead after 20 minutes through former West Ham striker Manuel Lanzini and after pushing for an equaliser the hosts thought they rescued a point in the dying seconds through Milton Gimenez – but VAR intervened due to a handball in the build-up.

The final whistle resulted in fury at the La Bombonera after Boca were reduced to 10 men and Romero couldn’t contain his anger as he attempted to confront one supporter in the stands.

The ex-United man had to be restrained by club staff after heated words with the man who was angry with the result. Boca Juniors were appalled by the goalkeeper’s crazy antics and have suspended him for the next two games.

In a statement, the club said: “The decision has been made that our player Sergio Romero will not be called up for the next two matches we have to play (against Club Atlético Belgrano de Córdoba and Asociación Atlética Argentinos Juniors).”

The club have also penalised supporters who fueled the fury in an attempt to curb it in future. Romero has since issued a public apology and claimed his reaction came after a fan swore at him.

“I want to offer my apologies to the Boca fans for the situation at the end. When the guy was swearing at me I lost my mind,” Romero explained.

“None of us go out to play a game to lose it, we wanted to win as much as they did and it didn’t happen. I apologise to the Boca fan, I was wrong with my reaction.”
