Manchester City seem to say enormous Premier League victory as vote scrapped

Manchester City seem to have scored a major win in their clash with the Premier League.

While the storm over City’s 115 Premier League charges continues, they’ve been locked in another tussle with the league over Associated Party Transaction Rules (APT). A vote on potential changes to these rules was set for a meeting on Thursday with all 20 clubs involved.

But in a dramatic twist, the amendment got yanked from the agenda. Insiders told the Daily Mail that the vote was axed ‘at the last minute’.

Back in June, City challenged the Premier League over the APT regulations, branding them as unlawful. The outcome of a two-week hearing into the issue is still under wraps, but earlier reports suggested City were betting on a win.

APT relate to the cash clubs make from businesses linked to them. Sky Sports pointed out during the summer that an example is City’s shirt sponsorship deal with Etihad, reports the Mirror.

The controversy centres on whether such deals are valued fairly. City have been battling the rules, claiming they’re anti-competitive and “‘deliberately intended to stifle commercial freedoms of particular clubs in particular circumstances, and thus to restrict economic competition”.

APT regulations were implemented after Newcastle United’s Saudi takeover in 2021. Yet, City’s 165-page claim for damages suggests, among other things, that these rules do not align with UK business law.

Meanwhile, the hearing into City’s 115 charges continues to unfold behind the scenes, separate from the APT debate.

The results of this are not anticipated until later in the Premier League season, and there remains a possibility for an appeal further down the line.

Other topics on the agenda for Thursday’s meeting included VAR decisions from the current season.

Tony Scholes, the Premier League’s chief football officer, was set to present on refereeing and VAR data, as well as provide an update on the potential implementation of semi-automated offside technology before the end of the ongoing campaign.
