University scholar union bar goes boozeless and ditches pints for smoothies

The day of messy fresher parties seem to be gone with one university opening a dry bar.

The University of Bradford has binned buy-one-get-one-free shots, pints and pitchers and replaced them with coffees and fruit smoothies.

The new alcohol-free student union bar was opened in “response to changing student habits”.

More and more youngsters are choosing not to drink, according to research

Research published by the charity Drinkaware in 2022 found that 26% of 16-24 year-olds did not drink, the highest percentage of any age group.

A spokesperson for the university said student life was “quite different to years ago” and that they had “acted on what students wanted in order to be more inclusive”.

The bar now serves boujee coffee, bubble tea, energy-boosting smoothies and cocktails.

Aleem Bashir, CEO of University of Bradford Union of Students, said: “A lot of students now have part-time jobs, some may have multiple jobs.

“When you have to wake up early morning for a shift you can’t be going in there hungover.

“It’s about diversifying the offering for students now and just making the options of non-alcoholic drinks available to them.”
