Lee Carsley stance on England job unclear as he offers FA ‘world class’ message

Lee Carsley has told FA bosses England deserve to have a world class manager.

And the interim boss has once again refused to rule himself out of being the man to lead the Three Lions on a full-time basis. Interim boss Carsley got back to winning ways, as England beat Finland 3-1 in Helsinki in the Nations League.

He has two more games to prove he can replace Gareth Southgate on a full time basis. And Carsley is still determined to show people he can be in with a shout of landing one of the most demanding jobs in football.

Carsley said: “I’m definitely not (ruling himself out). It’s important I do the best I can. I feel trusted, and whoever gets it will be fully deserving of it. This is a world class job. It’s up were with the best in football.

“This job deserves a world class coach who has won trophies, and I am still on the path to that. People are always going to try and put their chips on one side. I’m in the middle. My bosses have made it clear what they need from me.

“I’ve won the Euros with the U21s. I’m finding this job a challenge, but in a good way. I’m trying to be as clear as I can. It’s one of the top jobs in the world. The players we have available, we have a real chance of winning (a trophy).”

The FA could make a decision in a matter of weeks, but Carsley revealed he hasn’t given the outcome too much thought. He added: “I’ve not really thought much about it. I keep saying the same thing. My remit was six games and I’m happy with that. This is a privileged position.”

Carsley’s close friend Clinton Morrison reckons his former Republic of Ireland team-mate would jump at the chance to be permanent England manager. He said: “I know Lee Carsley. I speak to him. We’re still good friends, and if the FA want Lee Carsley to take the job, he will take the job.”
